NASA wants you to help create atlas of nighttime photos from space

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Are you a geography buff? A science lover? NASA has the perfect challenge for you.

The U.S. space agency is asking for the public's help to tag hundreds of thousands of night photos of Earth, most taken from the International Space Station.

The photos are available in an online collection, where people can browse the images and help identify which cities and towns different clusters of lights are coming from.

The goal is to create an open atlas of nighttime photos, available to the media, the public and scientists. NASA believes the project could ultimately help save energy, contribute to better human health and safety and improve our understanding of atmospheric chemistry.

Complutense University of Madrid is leading the project, called Cities at Night.
