HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Huntsville's historic Courthouse Square will come alive this Saturday with tales of rockets and deep space and missions to Mars.
The inaugural 'NASA on the Square' event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sponsored by Downtown Huntsville Inc., the free event will salute Marshall Space Flight Center's past successes and highlight its current and future work aimed at sending humans to Mars and beyond.
Among other things, there will be space-themed sidewalk art contests for kids, opportunities to chat with rocket scientists and astronauts, and displays where people can learn all about the Space Launch System deep-space rocket being developed in Huntsville. It is scheduled for a maiden test flight in 2017.
'We're really anticipating a great crowd,' said Chad Emerson, Downtown Huntsville Inc. CEO.
He said holding a public open house at Marshall is difficult because of its location behind the Redstone Arsenal gates. But Marshall and NASA leaders jumped at the chance to explain their missions and programs on the Courthouse Square, which will be closed to traffic for Saturday's event.
Dynetics, Aerojet Rocketdyne, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, National Space Club and Sci-Quest are among the other groups that will be scattered around the Square with exhibits and activities.
Visitors can also learn more about Huntsville's space-themed craft beers. The 'Great Space Beer Experience' will bring together brewers from Straight to Ale and Rocket Republic to share the stories behind Monkeynaut IPA, Laika Russian Imperial Stout and AstroNut Brown Ale.
That event is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Vibe co-working space on the north side of the Square.
The Huntsville-Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau has added a 13 th clue to its popular Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt in honor of NASA Day. The clue is: 'Gather as a 'grouper' at the fish out of water and see if you can 'catch' Luckie the Astro-duck during NASA Day on the Square, June 21 st 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. while supplies last.'
'Our friends at (Downtown Huntsville Inc.) and Marshall Space Flight Center have put together an extraordinary event that harkens back to Dr. Wernher von Braun's famous parade at Courthouse Square in the 1960s,' said Charles Winters, the convention and visitors bureau's executive vice president.
