NASA builds on relationships with AFRL, Dayton-area companies - Dayton Business Journal

Cleveland's NASA Glenn Research Center continues to push for Dayton-area partnerships.

Jim Free, director of NASA Glenn, came to the Dayton area in the summer of 2013 to meet with industry and academia with the idea that NASA was looking for potential business partners. I recently spoke with Free to get an update on those efforts.

Here's what he tells me has happened since then:

Free has been is discussions with leadership at Air Force Research Laboratory about broadening the partnership between the two. It's always been there, but Free says that relationship is now 'back on the map.' NASA Glenn is preparing to send an employee to AFRL on a 1-year detail while AFRL already has a person stationed at NASA Glenn. Free credited AFRL Executive Director Ricky Peters for his commitment to the partnership; NASA Glenn continues to work with AFRL and the state of Ohio on unmanned aircraft, or UAS, opportunities. It has been flight testing communications hardware, which fits into state direction to build upon unmanned systems. Free has also been in talks with the Ohio/Indiana UAS Center & Test Complex about possible partnerships; and NASA Glenn is looking to work with some Dayton-area companies it met here last year on advanced materials.

In other words, there are lot of things happening between NASA Glenn and Dayton, they're just taking time to develop.

'I'm very happy about the UAS relationship that we have; that's one that had some traction already and has continued to grow,' Free said. 'And the other ones are just taking time to nurture.'

Additionally, Free says NASA Glenn's relationship with State Rep. Rick Perales, R-Beavercreek - who set up the meetings last summer - has remained strong.

"That's a big deal," Bolden told a luncheon audience last week at the annual Von Braun Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama.
