Thousands of people came to Bayboro Harbor to see science in action at the annual Science Festival in St. Petersburg.
Experts answered questions from people curious about the sea during the event. It is a festival designed to make learning fun and has grown each year attracting 25,000 people during the 2 day event.
Hands on activities pop up everywhere, inspiring the young and teaching new concepts. Visitors gaze into lively fish tanks or handle animals in the touch tank, and share experiences they might not see in the open water. Some get to see preserved specimens and touch the sandpaper skin of locally caught sharks.
Cultivating future scientists and engineers is the goal of the festival, with an emphasis on STEM learning. They may become oceanographers and use instruments which measure salinity deep under the water, or others may captain boats that push tankers in and out of Tampa Bay.
All this technology benefits our lives, from protecting what we eat from red tide to keeping us safe from dangerous weather.
There is more data than ever and local groups like SECOORA organize it and make it accessible to everyone for free.
St. Petersburg is one of the country's top clusters for marine science with an estimated 1,600 people employed in the local industry.
Today's attendance shows how it is such a big part of the community.
