NORFOLK--Five Hampton Roads school districts are offering $5,000 bonuses to attract math and science teachers.
Virginia lawmakers have dedicated more than $1.6 million from the state's budget to help recruit and retain math and science teachers for middle and high schools.
'It's a wonderful incentive because it's becoming increasingly difficult to find students who are pursing degrees to become secondary mathematics teachers,' said Fiona Nichols, director of mathematics education for Portsmouth Schools.
School superintendents in Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Newport News and Hampton signed up for the incentive program.
It is unclear why superintendents in Virginia Beach and Suffolk decided not to apply for the state-incentive program.
Before this school year began, school officials in Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach told 13NewsNow they were having trouble hiring enough math and science teachers.
Under the program, new math and science teachers are eligible to receive the $5,000 incentive, and then $1,000 the following three years if they have good performance reviews. Teachers who switch from a fully-accredited school to a non-accredited school are also eligible for the same deal.
The Virginia Board of Education alerted local superintendents in August about the new cash for teachers, but left it up to local districts to tell teachers about the program. State officials stressed superintendents were responsible for signing the applications and mailing in the packet before the September 24th, 2014 deadline.
The incentives are on a first come, first served basis. Once the money runs out, the General Assembly would have to vote to add more cash to the program.
