WTF NASA: Fan website calls attention to all of NASA's creations - whnt.com

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - WTF NASA doesn't mince words.

It does share facts, specifically about awesome stuff you have because of NASA.

Jacob Mulligan made the site as a hobby project in college. 'I probably spent two days or a day building the website and five or six days on Reddit or just googling or looking at Twitter accounts.'

We wanted to meet with the guy in charge of what they call tech transfer over at Marshall. One problem, NASA Tech Transfer Manager Terry Taylor tells us, 'We're actually in a meeting this week here in Stennis Space Center with our agency, NASA, trying to sort out how we're going to do setting our goals for the year and finding ways to accelerate our tech transfer to the public.'

So instead of meeting him at the center, we asked him about their mission on Skype.

Taylor tells us, 'That mission was given to NASA, to not only build the Saturn V and the Apollo and all these great science missions and things, but to take that technology we develop for those missions and apply it to things that can help people on Earth, like new commercial products, improved commercial products.'

NASA spinoffs, things that wouldn't exist without NASA, range from about a third of cell phone cameras to a device they use to get football players ready for games - called a Game Ready.

It benefits players, fans, and everyday folk, like Taylor, who confides, 'I used it myself personally after shoulder surgery about four months ago. It's been the best thing ever.'

Getting that tech out to the world is a big mission of NASA's, and making sure people realize how great that is, the mission of Mulligan.

He says, 'I think that people underappreciate in general how much of the technology that we use every day is based in government research. The internet wouldn't exist without government research. GPS wouldn't exist.'

Point being, we should be grateful for more than just the space travel.

You can find the kid-friendly version of Mulligan's website here. To learn more, you can also check out NASA's official page for spinoffs and their dedicated twitter account.
