NASA flame experiments in space

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 4.1-magnitude earthquake just southwest of Lanai.

The honorees are George David Center, Mark Cunningham, Anona Napoleon, Randy Rarick and Sonny Tanabe.

ISS astronauts play with fuel droplets and fire in experiments, create what look like 'jellyfish on fire'

Published:

(NASA/Reid Wiseman) - A 'jellyfish on fire' is how one astronaut described the results of experiments on fuel droplets at the International Space Station (ISS).

Astronauts on ISS are playing with fire!

They're conducting experiments on how fuel burns in microgravity.

NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman tweeted out Vines of the little fires on Thursday.

He wrote they look like 'jellyfish on fire.'

They're looking at how quickly fuel burns, the conditions needed for soot to form - and how mixtures of fuels evaporate before burning.

NASA says the experiments could lead to the development of safer spacecraft, and increased fuel efficiency back on earth.

It is an increasingly costly arrangement, which the head of NASA has called "unacceptable," made worse by U.S.-Russian tensions over the crisis in Ukraine.
