The 2014 Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest, which is run by Britain's Royal Observatory, Greenwich, received more than 2,500 entries. Here are three of the finalists:
Sebastiaìn Guillermaz combined multiple shots to produce a time-lapse effect as the Earth's rotation draws the light from the stars into long trails arcing over the beach in Buenos Aires.
Tommy Richardsen captured his image in Steinsvik, Norway, during a strong aurora flare that lasted only a few minutes. The figure on the right side is the photographer's brother, who was searching for his lost lens cap.
Ivan Eder looked 7,500 light-years away into the constellation Cassiopeia to photograph the Heart Nebula, a vast region of glowing gas energized by a cluster of young stars at its center.
