Astronomy guru asks are we alone in the galaxy?

WE ARE not alone. The X-Files told us so, as did The Simpsons.

And now the University of Southern Queensland's astronomy guru Brad Carter will add his weight to the fascinating notion of inter-planetary life at the Artsworx Astronomy at Twilight talk on Wednesday, July 23.

Associate Professor Carter teaches and conducts research in physics and astronomy, and is currently focusing his research efforts on stellar astronomy and planetary systems. This puts him in the perfect position to address some of those age-old questions that intrigue mankind: Is there life on other planets? What else is out there in space?

Astronomical research has revealed possibly thousands of planets orbiting stars other than the sun, which means they may harbour life or that the human race could one day call them home. Just as we need the sun to survive, other planets must have their own star in order to be habitable.

The Astronomy at Twilight talk will review the study of such planets and discuss the latest research regarding the search for habitable worlds other than our own.

'Many stars are now known to host planets, and the quest for planets includes a search for planets most like our Earth,' Associate Professor Carter said.

'Astronomers are pathfinders for the human race, using science to explore the greatest extremes of space, time and energy, developing new technologies, and discovering new worlds around other stars that robotic emissaries from our planet may one day visit.'

They gave it a rather pedestrian name: the core-accretion theory.
