Science research program at Burnt Hills

Katie Bashant found her passion in a science laboratory at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School.

Bashant's research on lyme disease has given her an edge winning college scholarships, national recognition and research opportunities both at Albany Medical Center and the University of Utah. She first delved into the topic of lyme disease as a sophomore in the science research program.

The three-year science research program at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School has the hallmarks of a successful program. It's an elective shielded from budget cuts, with expansive community support (one family rented an apartment in Poughkeepsie, New York, for a summer so their daughter could commute to a research lab at Columbia University. She later received a full scholarship to Columbia).

The program also is attractive to who thrive in a traditional classroom as well as students who are looking for a non-traditional outlet for their energy.

'The program definitely changed my life and I'm 100 percent grateful for the opportunity,' says Bashant, who is spending her summer in a research lab focused on lyme disease at University of Utah. Bashant is a junior the University of Vermont, where she studies microbiology and molecular genetics.

Regina Reals has taught the course in Burnt Hills, a suburban high school in Saratoga County, for the past 15 years. During that time, she's collected a reel of success stories. One young woman reclassified 60 stars in the course of her astronomy research. That student, along with several others, have been selected to make presentations at the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search competition. Many other students have participated in local, national and international science conferences.
