Tourism promoters in Paita, Peru, are trying to create a new form of niche tourism in the area.

Peru's many natural wonders bring travellers from all over the world to seé unique plants, animals, and landscapes. But now tourism promoters in the northwestern city of Paita are looking to the heavens for a natural attraction that could bring new travellers to the area.
According to Andina News Agency, the Provincial Municipality of Paita is launching a program called 'Telescope Nights,' in which participants would get to view the beautiful, starry skies of Paita with telescopes.
Andina reports that part of the program's goal is simply to educate people about astronomy.
'Telescope Nights' is a fairly modest event right now, but local authorities are hoping to expand. 'Initially, [the event] will take place in the Turistico Municipal Dock,' explained tourism promoter Jimmy Abad Coloma, 'but the idea is to eventually have a real observatory so many people can watch the skies. We did this same program last year, and it was very well-received.'
Before the stargazing starts, Andina reports, attendees will get a chance to listen to astronomer Alberto Gomez Dextre, who will point out the famous constellations and distinguishing features of the Paita sky.
