Astronomy Photo of the Day: 6/02/14 – NGC 4605

The galaxy belongs to the same classification type as our galaxy, SBc ( for 'Spiral Barred Galaxy'). Galaxies that fit the designation tend to have prominent bars spanning across their central region, along with spiral arms that aren't as defined as other spiral galaxies, but are loosely wound.

NGC 4605 is a member of the Messier 81 group, which contains some 50 galaxies. It also happens to be the closest galaxy cluster found beyond our Local Group.
