HEMET: Sleuthing, DNA, more at science center


The Western Science Center has a series of week-long science sessions for kids to learn and play during the summer months.


For children entering grades 7 to 12, the center will host a DNA Biology Lab session. Campers will learn about the structure and function of DNA with some hands-on experiments such as transforming bacteria strains. There will be two sessions of DNA Biology Lab: July 7-11, 9 a.m.-noon; and July 21-25, 12:30-3:30 p.m.


Time Traveler's Camp will teach kids about cultures from the past, and campers grades 3-6 will have a chance to build their own artifact. June 16-20, 12:30-3:30 p.m.


The Small Hands Science Camp is aimed at the youngest campers, those entering kindergarten and first grade. This will give them an opportunity to learn about science at a level appropriate and interesting to them. June 23-27, 9 a.m.-noon.


The Science Explorer camp will help children explore the world of science, from astronomy to zoology. The two parts are different, so science explorers may attend one or both. Part A: July 7-11,9 a.m.-noon. Part B: July 21-25, 12:30-3:30 p.m.


Science Sleuth Lab will focus on how to solve mysteries like 'CSI.' This session is for campers entering grades 3-6. July 14-18, 9 a.m.-noon.


Messerific! camp will be for campers entering grades 3-6 and will be all about making a mess while creating and learning. There will be two sessions: July 14-18, 12:30-3:30 p.m.; and July 28-Aug. 1, 9 a.m.-noon.


Excavate: Paleontology will explore this branch of science with some examples of field work, procedures, ethics and excavation in the museum's simulated dig site. This session is for campers entering grades 6-11. July 21-25 and July 28-Aug. 1, 9 a.m.-noon.


For young tinkerers, try Inventor Camp. Campers will discover the science and imagination behind some of the world's most famous inventors and scientists through hands-on activities and experiments. July 28-Aug. 1, 12:30-3:30 p.m.


Also, there will be Art and Nature Camp, which will feature science and crafts. July 7-11, 12:30-3:30 p.m.; and July 21-25, 9 a.m.-noon.


Each session of camp costs $95 for nonmembers, $85 for museum members, plus a materials fee.


Registration needs to be submitted two weeks before each session.
