GUWAHATI: In a bid to popularize astronomy and astrophysics in the NE region, the Cotton College State University (CCSU) will run a summer school from next month.
The school will function with support from Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune and 'Friends of Cotton' from June 16 to July 5. Undergraduate students of any stream can apply to CCSU for a berth in the summer school where globally renowned experts interact with students.
'With their past experience and achievements in academic career, students pursuing undergraduate courses from any educational institution can apply for a seat in the summer school. Even the CCSU students will have to apply,' said a spokesperson of the university.
The school will cover a wide range of topics which will include stars and stellar evolution, binary stellar systems, interstellar medium, pulsars, gravitational waves, galaxies, clusters of galaxies and active galaxies, cosmology and large-scale structure formation,' said CCSU vice-chancellor DJ Saikia.
He added that there will be hands-on experience in data analysis, intensive tutorials and screening of astronomy-related movies. Apart from renowned academicians from abroad, experts from Cotton College and CCSU, IIT-Guwahati, Gauhati University and Tezpur University will also impart knowledge to students.
Saikia said the CCSU has made elaborate arrangement for the event and will rope in astronomers from foreign countries. 'A number of astronomers from outside the country such as Chris Salter and Tapasi Ghosh from Arecibo Observatory, USA, and Harsha Raichur from NORDITA, Sweden, will interact with the students via skype in the summer school,' added the vice-chancellor.
As majority of educational institutions in the country do not have astronomy and astrophysics at the undergraduate level, a senior official of the CCSU said the summer school will inspire students to take up the subjects at the post-graduate level.
